Subject: RE: Procedures for dealing with students leaving with outstanding books and or fines
Dear Chris
This is our current procedure at Glasgow Caledonian University Library.
1. We treat every case individually. What we charge depends on various factors - is the book on a current reading list, age of book, number of copies we hold, do we have later editions in stock and if we have an electronic copy . We check for replacement cost, but may offer a reduced price if paid by a certain date. After this date we will charge the full price.
2. No flat rate replacement cost.
3.We do not charge an administration fee.
4. We would only chase students who have left for outstanding books. We send emails with the details of books outstanding and we waive any fines on books returned, our main concern is getting our books back. We would like to get students before they graduate and are looking in to ways of doing this.
I would be interested in any other feedback you receive as we are always reviewing our procedures.
Kind regards
Kathleen Angell

Subject: Procedures for dealing with students leaving with outstanding books and or fines
Dear List
We have been asked by our Finance department to investigate streamlining our debtors procedures. I would be very glad if you could spare the time to answer the following questions.
[For your information, Goldsmiths charges the replacement cost of items for material outstanding after the end of the course. Students are put on the College’s debtors list for the cost of the books and any fines over £10. They are then told they will not receive their graduation certificates until they pay all outstanding debts].
1. How much do you charge to replace a lost or failed to return item?
2. If you charge a flat replacement cost, how much is it?
3. Do you include an administration fee as well as replacement charge?
4. Do you chase students for fines as well as outstanding books once they have left? If you do is there a lower limit for this?
Many thanks!
Chris
