My local military expert (David Hunt) says:
"H normally indicates a fire hydrant with the distance of the hydrant
cover shown in ft/ins perpendicular from the plate.
There are a number of suffix letters to the H for example; HD = double
hydrant and HH = hydraulic hydrant (both most unlikely outside major
cities). Nothing in my 1943 list with a 'B'
Prefix letters include DWH =dirty water hydrant, RW river water, FH =
fire hydrant. FP =fire plug and FC =fire cock. "
Could be more recent than the WW2 list he was checking but he was in the
army post-war.

Subject: Marker meaning
OK here's today's Friday question:
I've been asked what a marker post at an army training camp might
indicate. It is a small ?concrete? slab with a square metal plate
bolted to it. It reads
H.B.
4' 6"
Does anyone know? I think it is unlikely to refer to the burial plot of
a short person!
