"Just found the term 'ball hydrant' where the water pressure holds a
hard wooden ball covered with rubber or gutta percha against a ring
orifice. When the special standpipe is attached to the hydrant, there is
a rod with small plate that pushes the ball down against the water
pressure and allows water to flow up the standpipe. "
So have a look 4' 6" away...

Subject: Marker meaning
OK here's today's Friday question:
I've been asked what a marker post at an army training camp might
indicate. It is a small ?concrete? slab with a square metal plate
bolted to it. It reads
H.B.
4' 6"
Does anyone know? I think it is unlikely to refer to the burial plot of
a short person!
