Research Fellow (Modelling and Optimising Manufacturing Processes for Cross-sector Reuse of Heterogeneous Materials)
Manufacturing and Materials Department, School of Applied Sciences
Cranfield University
£29,793 to £33,207 per annum (Fixed term contract for 36 months)
Closing date for receipt of applications: 13 MARCH 2013
Cranfield University is one of the leading research centres in the area of manufacturing process optimisation. It is developing internationally-leading research in this area by exploiting the synergies with its research activities in energy and material efficiency. The University provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for multidisciplinary research and industrial collaboration.
This is an exciting new position to support the continued growth of Cranfield's research portfolio in engineering optimisation and resource efficiency. This position is part of a research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) on 'Efficient X-sector use of Heterogeneous Materials in Manufacturing (EXHUME)'. This research project represents an emerging new collaboration between four leading Universities (Cranfield University, University of Birmingham, University of Exeter and University of Manchester) to provide a step-change to the recycling and remanufacturing of composite materials which evoke difficult recycling challenges due to the heterogeneity of their composition.
This position will focus on modelling and optimising manufacturing processes for efficient cross-sector reuse of heterogeneous materials. The two main research areas for this position are: (i) capturing and modelling material flows in a factory to identify quantity/quality/point-of-creation of scrap and opportunities for reuse within/across sectors, and (ii) multi-objective optimisation to enable an evidence-based resource/cost/performance trade-off analysis of the manufacturing processes. The proposed optimisation framework will consist of three inter-connected components for: (i) optimising the parameters used in the process technologies for transforming composites scrap to maximise the quantity and quality of material recovery with minimum resources and costs, (ii) optimising the parameters of the remanufacturing process such that the properties of recovered materials are not damaged, and (iii) optimising the design and manufacturing processes of the final product based on the changes in material properties as a result of using recovered materials instead of virgin materials. You will be expected to research in these areas, develop new research proposals and manage relationships with academic and industrial partners in the project.
You should have a degree in a relevant engineering discipline such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or manufacturing/industrial engineering. You will have a PhD (or will be close to completion) or have equivalent research/work experience in the areas of engineering optimisation (including manufacturing process optimisation), resource efficiency (including energy and material efficiency in manufacturing) and design and manufacture of composite structures. It is essential to have knowledge of composites design and manufacture, manufacturing process optimisation and resource efficiency. You will be required to have technical paper and article writing, research proposal writing, organisation, analytical, communication (oral and written), and client handling skills.
