URGENT – Fully funded place for three-month Visiting Research Studentship, available immediately at the Music Computing Lab at the Open University.

A fully funded place for a three-month Visiting Research Student is immediately available at the Music Computing Lab at the Open University. You must be an EU or UK National. Prospective students could be excellent final year undergraduates, Masters students, or PhD students, or could have recently completed any of these awards. You must be available to start in March 2013.

Broadly, we are interested in candidates with musical skills (formal or informal) and experience in HCI evaluation or similar. Music-related computing skills, particularly in Max/MSP or PD programming, would be a major advantage. Skills in shooting, editing and disseminating video, or photographic skills would also be an advantage.

The project will focus on The Haptic Bracelets, which are light, wearable, programmable, interactive, wireless bracelets with built-in sensors and vibrotactiles, typically worn on multiple limbs. They are controllable by iPads and iPhones, which also collect data. You will work with groups of users from a wide variety of backgrounds to organise, run and document a wide range of pilot activities with this technology.

You will be responsible for (a) planning, organising and running events, managing participants, collecting data (b) transporting, setting up and adjusting systems, with minor maintenance programming where appropriate, (c) analysing data and documenting as appropriate (d) dissemination via text and other media as needed.

The studentship is available to start immediately. The studentship will run for three months. You will be based at the Open University Campus in Milton Keynes. We will pay for accommodation in Milton Keynes plus living expenses. We can also cover reasonable travel expenses at the start and finish of the studentship.

For more information, or for informal enquiries, contact s.holland (insert <at> here) open.ac.uk. Applications should also be sent to this address, and also copied to [log in to unmask]

Applications should include a CV and covering note that summarizes
• evidence of appropriate knowledge, skills and experience,
• why you want to undertake this particular studentship and why you would be a good candidate,
• telephone, email and postal contact details for two referees, at least one of whom must be able to comment on subject discipline specifics.

For background information, see http://http://mcl.open.ac.uk/musiclab

This is an opportunity to gain experience in research at the Music Computing Lab. The project will lead to a publication with the student contributing as co-author.
