Dear DCMI Registry, Vocabulary, and Architecture Communities,
Following DC2011, a Task Group was formed to look at the
infrastructure for management of DCMI Vocabularies. This Draft Report
[1] is the culmination of that investigation, and the Task Group
chairs would like comments from interested parties BY FRIDAY MARCH 22,
before the draft is sent to the DCMI Advisory Board.
The Task Group found that no one "Vocabulary Management System" is
likely to meet our needs, and instead recommends that the DCMI
Directorate focus on individual functional requirements as they arise
& investigates various tools and workflows that could be used to meet
those individual functional needs. The initial functions outlined in
the Draft Report are:
* Export of existing documentation: Building on already established
efforts to provide content negotiation and system generated HTML with
embedded RDFa, a reference implementation will need to be able to
ingest the current RDF representations of the canonical, English
Language RDF files and generate content negotiable documentation in
both human and machine readable formats.
* Elimination of any backlogs of amendments: Pending updates for
clarifications and corrections can be used to test implementations.
Where possible, on-going development of vocabularies should also be
used to test support for transparency, version control, etc.
* Support for translations of all documents.
* Support for managing alignments between DCMI Vvocabularies and
other emerging ontologies and terminologies. Pilot cases might be the
ongoing work of the Schema.org Alignment Task Group [4], expanding the
DCMI vocabularies, and of external library communities related to DCMI
such as IFLA, MARC, and RDA who are developing RDF maps to DCMI
vocabularies, effectively extending and refining them.
Please let us know, on or off list, if you have any questions,
concerns or comments about this initial report.
