A note for the linguistic minded:
a group of us thought of trying to translate 'wilderness' into languages beyond English, and to see what twists and turns these translations might take. Now that we've collected a number of contributions, it seems that northern European languages came out with notions much like their English counterparts, but with lots of variation in between, and beyond.... While history was not our main goal here, many translators couldn't help but mention earlier derivatives of their word.
