Seminar: 'M.G. Smith and the Report on 'The Ras Tafari Movement in Kingston, Jamaica' (1960): A Case Study of Applied Colonial Social Anthropology''
Apr 17, 2013 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Location: UCL-Institute of the Americas<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/americas/>, 51 Gordon Square, London, WC1H 0PQ<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/americas/find-us>
UCL - Institute of the Americas (UCL-IA) is truly honored to host distinguished Caribbean scholar, Prof Robert Hill (UCLA)<http://www.history.ucla.edu/people/faculty?lid=606> to deliver this paper, part of UCL-IA's series of Caribbean seminars.
The subject of this paper, M.G. Smith, will no doubt elicit enormous interest on account of his contribution to the field of social anthropology and his work on the Caribbean, but he is also of particular interest for us at UCL since was head of the Department of Anthropology at UCL<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/anthropology/> from 1969-1975, the first Jamaican scholar to hold the post.
The paper will critically re-examine Smith's seminal 1960 Report on the Rastafari Movement in Kingston, Jamaica, elucidating the hidden conflicts that lay behind its production.
Attendance is free of charge but registration is required<http://rastafari-movement.eventbrite.co.uk/>. As spaces are limited you are strongly encouraged to register well in advance of the event.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Oscar Martinez
