The Cultural, Communication and Computing Research Institute (C3RI), is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Research Associate to be part of the meSch project team.
meSch is part funded by the EU ICT Access to Cultural Resources, and will undertake research to create a hardware and software platform that allows curators of cultural heritage institutions to create smart, tangible and adaptive exhibits for visitors to interact with. The project is multidisciplinary, with work on design, technology development, human-computer interaction and heritage studies. The project involves 12 partners across Europe and Sheffield Hallam University acts as project coordinator.
Working in the meSch project team, as a proactive and collaborative member, you will contribute to the achievement of the project objectives. You will carry out planned research activities and develop research on embedded systems, software programming and electronic design. The role requires: active participation in multiparty system integration; good written and verbal communication skills; willingness to travel abroad for project reviews, implementation meetings, and trials in museums; interest in multidisciplinary work with links to HCI, Interaction Design and heritage studies.
You will have a degree in Electronic Engineering/Computer Science, a related technical discipline such as Ubiquitous Computing or Media Engineering, or equivalent experience, and proven expertise in embedded systems or ubiquitous computing. You will be familiar with different types of sensors and actuators as well as wireless communication among distributed computational devices. Relevant experience includes electronic design, ubiquitous computing, smart objects, and tangible and embedded interaction. You will have extensive experience in programming, possibly on different open source platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry PI, .NET Gadgeteer. Knowledge of user interface implementation principles, development and simulation environments is desirable.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary project team that includes designers and social scientists, which requires you to effectively communicate ideas, listen to others and openly discuss any issues, on an equal base. The ability to work proactively and independently, efficiently managing your time is essential. You will be able to meet deadlines with strict schedules, and accept the possibility of working out of hours or at weekends to meet project requirements.
