Apologies for cross posting
As I described in my email of 30th Jan to the Radio Studies list, those who want to listen to old radio are confronted with a series of obstacles. Studying old radio, no matter who you are, remains an extremely difficult and at times impossible activity.
But there are developments which, slowly but surely, are opening up the BBC archive.
By far the most exciting of these is the availability of Infax (in 'redacted' form) in the British Library reading rooms.
It might sound a bit obscure but if you can get yourself to the BL at St Pancras in central London and also acquire a reader's card then you can search the 'BBC Pilot Service' on one of the library's computers - this is a fairly complete catalogue of the entire BBC sound archive.
I did this the other day to check out the plays of the great radio dramatist, Giles Cooper and my results are below.
But I do need to get as full a picture as possible of your current and past research using radio archives.
Some of you have very kindly already contacted me but can I now ask..
If you are now or have in the past carried out research using recorded/ archived radio can you please let me know (directly by email) with a brief account of any problems you have had?
This applies to all researchers (students, academics, writers etc.).
We must get information about the extent of the problem in order to press for improved access.
Thanks
Hugh
