I have been going through computer files created by our organisation (a small but national charity) over the years and sent to me in Dropbox.
A lot of these files come from 10-15 years ago and don't register as being a recognised format. The closest I get is to use Notepad but that of course gives a whole load of gobbledegook (not a technical term...) with probably the content of the file mixed up in it. Certainly not the original content, and certainly not manageable as there are a lot of files. This is a REAL PROBLEM for me, but surely not ONLY for me. Are there commonly known of ways/ tools of digging down into them to find the programs/operating systems they were created in, and then being able to use them?
In other words I suppose, is there any written software, especially for archives, that offers ways of accessing old formats across different platforms?
Any ideas?
