Dear Alexandra,
This looks like a really interesting and practical course. When I did
my MSc in archaeobotany at UCL in 1995/6 my 'commercial' training was
on the job when I started work for MoLAS in 1996. I did have Gordon
Hillman as a teacher, which made up for any 'how to earn money doing
this' shortfall. It's good that you're including that in your course
and the chance to take part in research programmes will be inspiring
for your students.
If you have any spare cash for a visiting lecturer or helping pair of
hands feel free to get in touch with me if you think I'll have
anything to offer.I expect you already have a list of people you plan
to bring in but I'll get my website up to date soon and outreach is an
income stream I want to get going again. Unfortunately I can't offer
my time for free because archaeology is my only source of income but I
have got used to a low and sporadic income so anything helps.
So, good luck and good to see one academic institution still running
some archaeobotany. I visited the Institute of Archaeology's library
at UCL yesterday and they didn't have many of the new expensive
reference books I want to get access to but can't afford to buy for
myself. This is possibly a sign of changes in courses there. Luckily I
can still download up to date journal articles onto a memory stick
there. Now just need to fund my own reading week and get a paper or
two out there in my own name rather than 'contributor to'.
best wishes,
Lisa
