Centre for Transport Studies
Imperial College London
Marie Curie Fellow in Intelligent Transport Systems for Asset Management
A researcher is required to develop and implement new methods to estimate and predict the traffic flows and
traffic-related loadings on key transport infrastructure elements, as part of the development of improved methods
of transport asset management. The successful candidate will develop new methods to characterise the
composition of traffic flow and incidence and nature of extreme loading events. This will draw on both existing
and emerging traffic sensor sources and on statistical modelling and machine learning methods.
The researcher will work as part of SmartEN project. SmartEN is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network that aims
to implement a multidisciplinary research and training programme in the field of smart infrastructure
management. It involves collaboration between a number of European Universities, research institutes and
businesses. The Fellow will have the opportunity to interact with researchers on the programme through a variety
of mechanisms. Further information on the project can be found at www.smarten-itn.eu
The work will be undertaken within the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London, under the
supervision of Prof John Polak. CTS is one of largest and most successful multidisciplinary transport research
groups in Europe and is an acknowledged centre of excellence in the area of intelligent transport systems, with an
especially strong track record in the areas of pervasive sensing, intelligent network management and control,
traffic modelling and simulation, user behaviour and traveller information systems.
The Fellowship is available immediately and is a fixed term appointment that will conclude on 30th November
2013. Salary will be in the range £38,400 to £45,400 per annum, pro rata.
Applicants should have a PhD in the field of transport network modelling or intelligent transport systems or have
at least 4 years of full time equivalent research experience. Additionally, applicants must be within the first five
years of their career in research. Moreover, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity
(work, studies, etc) in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. Candidates must ensure they fulfil all
the eligibility requirements for an "experienced researcher" as specified at
ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/docs/rea-annex3-mc-itn-multi-v5_en.p df.
