Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padova
invites whoever is interested to join us in compiling a series of
research articles based the analysis of databases "Fertili", "Billings",
"London" and "Barrett and Marshall" in honour of Bernardo Colombo, died
on April 26th, 2012.
Bernardo Colombo has been a scientist eclectic and involved in many
different fields such as statistics, demography, biostatistics,
economics, sociology, etc.
However, in the last 30 years of his long life he concentrated his
interests to the cycle biometry in particular by collecting several high
quality databases. To celebrate his memory we propose to whom wants to
honour him to participate to this project working on one of these
datasets. On February 24, 2014 a meeting in honour of Bernardo Colombo
will be hosted by the Department of Statistical Sciences of the
University of Padova, when all the contributors will present theirs
analyses.
OVERVIEW: Those who have been following the work of Bernardo Colombo in
the last thirty years, would be familiar with these databases. It is in
fact a collection of several databases, which are unique for their
quality and completeness, fundamental for the study of the biometrics of
the menstrual cycle of a woman. Such a quality makes these data easily
accessible also for those who never used them. Thus whoever is
interested to honour prof. Colombo can adhere to our invitation.
Professor Colombo spent years planning, collecting and analysing
information, and diffusing the results. The work lead to a number of
fruitful collaborations, both nationally and internationally, with
doctors, gynaecologists, endocrinologists, demographers,
biostatisticians, experts on public health, statisticians and also
scholars in the field of Human Science (e.g. theologians and experts on
ethics). These collaborations have produced, and continue to produce,
results of a high scientific level, as can be seen by the number of
publications which have appeared in important national and international
journals.
The variety of interesting results obtained raise many other scientific
problems and open up the way for much more research based on the use of
these databases.
AREAS OF INTEREST: Papers requested should be based on the analysis of
"Fertili", "Billings", "London" and "Barrett and Marshall" databases. At
the web page http://bernardo.stat.unipd.it/project.html some examples of
possible areas of analysis can be found.
DEADLINE: The databases are property of the Department of Statistical
Sciences and are available for research activity after an agreement in
which users commit themselves to use data not for profit nor for
purposes in contrast with those with which data have been collected. In
order to facilitate access to datasets and preparation of the agreement,
we propose to fill in and sign the form that can be downloaded at
http://bernardo.stat.unipd.it/form.pdf. Those who made request, will
receive the databases by April 10, 2013. The deadline for sending an
abstract of no more than 4 pages is December 31, 2013. The final meeting
in honour of professor Colombo in which the results of the analyses will
be presented will be hosted by the Department of Statistical Sciences on
February 24, 2014.
WEB SITE: At the web site http://bernardo.stat.unipd.it/ all the
relevant information is available.
