Dear Dave
I was actually so relieved not to have to delete long strings of very unpleasant e-mails when you decided, very rightly, not to give space to the spats. It is unfortunate indeed that academia seems to be constructed by some as a hybrid between the Bafta and a boxing ring. Are we to pander to those who would have c-lists and celebs. Last night I was told of some red brick academic talking of a very well known and respected professor as semi-famous, because he was not in a red brick establishment.
I love working with ideas and I think they count. This is why I am in academia and when I come across the kind of people and dynamics evidenced in your quote and previous spats, I have to remind myself there are academics who are not like that.
It does definitely make me not want to join the A-list celebs ranks...

Subject: [ACADEMIC-STUDY-MAGIC] Dear List ...
Dear list-members,
I thought that I would share this with you. Since the deletion of Prof Robert Segal following his many spats with N.W. Azal, I have received a number of increasingly abusive offlist rants - to which I won't reply because they are pompous, self-regarding and hysterical - regarding his disbelief that he was deleted. This is his latest (and thought I would share because this is clearly what he thinks of the contributors here):
"Your list seems to attract C-listers: nonacademics, career PhD students, and staffers at former polytechnics.
You never did recognize the difference between disagreement and bigotry. It is you who should have been apologizing to me.
Our paths will never cross again.

Ironically, he sought my advice about setting up his the myth JISCMAIL list because of the positive experiences he had on here. I like the man as an academic, though I often disagree with his takes on Jung and Campbell, but honestly, is this what academia is about? It's just depressing ...
