Yes, that's exactly what I thought. It's a very conventional implementation of the technology that doesn't really exploit the functionality that the Learning Registry that is potentially capable of delivering. As you said though, if this is what meets US schools' requirements then that's all well and good I guess. Still it'll be interesting to see how the implementation scales.

Seems that basically they have accepted the problems and built a subset rule for the paradata and metadata they'll collect, and then provide simpler APIs for developers to use. So it removes the problem, by removing the potential. So it is more accessible, but also less accessible.

New US schools initiative to implement the Learning Registry


Hi folks,

Some of you who have been following the development of the US Learning Registry project might be interested to know that it is going to be implemented by a major new Gates and Carnegie funded technology integration initiative for US schools called inBloom. There have been several reports about this initiative in the tech press this week, including Zdnet (http://www.zdnet.com/inbloom-launches-with-gatescarnegie-funds-to-unify-e-learning-services-7000010900/) and TechCruch (http://techcrunch.com/2013/02/05/with-100m-from-the-gates-foundation-others-inbloom-wants-to-transform-education-by-unleashing-its-data/). I've also written a blog post picking out some interesting details from the standards alignment whitepaper and developer documentation (http://blogs.cetis.ac.uk/lmc/2013/02/08/inbloom-to-implement-learning-registry-and-lrmi/)

inBloom is also proposing to implement a profile of the Learning Registry paradata spec and the LRMI specification, which our very own Phil Barker co-authored :)

If any of you have had a play around with the Learning Registry (Pat, Nick, I'm looking at you :) I'd be interested to know what you think of inBloom's proposed implementation.
