Thanks Mike and Hi Adrian,
To see the list of collections in Culture Grid (& number of records
within each) click on the refine list to left of results-grid (or follow
this link to see all revealed http://tinyurl.com/culturegulturegrid-all
-you'll need to expand the 'collections' list on left)
Note, the list includes some 'non-item' data (e.g. collection &
institution records and some 'parent collections' of item-data) and
there is also not necessarily a direct correlation between a distinct
'item-collection' in Culture Grid & single museums bcos of the way data
has come from different projects themselves at different levels of
'aggregation', and nor will it indicate what percentage this data is
compared with all the collections data within a Museum or its physical
collection volumes or what's not-within Culture Grid, but hopefully it
give a useful indicator. (A tip of an ice-berg I suspect!)
Open Licensing e.g. Open Government Licence
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/ is
advocated for the data within CG and data CG passes to Europeana (Expand
the Culture Grid list at:
http://www.europeana.eu/portal/europeana-providers.html ) is subject to
the Europeana Data Exchange Agreement & Usage Guidelines, which is
basically Creative Commons Zero, plus recommended attribution, (Note,
this if for the data, not 'assets', which come with their own usually
more restricted terms, which should be in the metadata records.)
Mia's API list may be useful for wider than CG context
http://museum-api.pbworks.com/w/page/21933420/Museum%C2%A0APIs and of
course as more collections are added to Culture Grid and Europeana a
more comprehensive picture could be produced.
Mia's survey posted to list about Open Data http://bit.ly/V959mH and the
new ACE survey re digital
http://s23.omniwebresearch.co.uk/(S(hjf5yz45gmpaggm5tbhovu45))/show.aspx
and benchmarking activities around digital
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/discover/sustaining-digital/1608-digit
al-benchmarks-for-the-culture-sector should all combine to produce a
better picture in the longer term.

I would think the Culture Grid would be a good start
http://www.culturegrid.org.uk/
A fair number of collections are shared there - "3 million items from
hundreds of collections" - and onwards via Europeana
