Hello,
I had a look at the code and I don't think that the backup should cause
any drawing-related (and so X11-related) functions to be called, although
I might be wrong about that. But evidently something messed up the X
server and it would be good if I could figure out how to reliably
reproduce this problem.
And very odd that the menus started working....
