Dr Birgitta Hosea
"The Medium is the Messenger"
Monday 18th February 2013
4.30pm start
Room A034 (Film Studio 2)
Abstract
As part of her long standing interest in digital materiality and the origins of animation, Birgitta Hosea will present the research into Victorian mediumship and spirit photography that inspired her recent work, ‘Medium’. In this site-specific, tableau vivant, Hosea performs the role of a techno-medium by manifesting electronic ectoplasm and channeling digital, spirit guides from old films and radio. Building on the ideas of Alan Cholodenko, Jacques Derrida and Roland Barthes that film is a necromantic process in which lifeless matter is re-animated into movement, the piece contrasts manipulated, indexical imagery with corporeal presence to explore the act of mediation that is involved in the digital image making process. It examines the connections between a medium, such as film or digital code, through which a message is encoded, stored and transmitted and the psychic medium, a person who transmits messages from the spirit world.
Documentation of the research process involved in the creation of ‘Medium’ will be included in the exhibition of practice-based research, ‘Making Knowledge’, at the Lethaby Gallery, Central Saint Martins, Granary Square, Kings Cross, London from 20th February 2013.
