What version are you using?
If you upgrade to 1.9x and use the HTML 5 playback the compression of text in images is much less of a problem. Compare these two views of the same example LO:

Subject: Hotspots for text
Dear all
I'd like to be able to use the hotspot functionality with text as well as images. This would be useful for exploring texts, e.g. by providing grammar tips, translation comments, literary commentary and much more. At the moment, I have used images of text but the text tends to become distorted and the overall look is less professional.
Is there any way of doing this in Xerte or does anyone know of any projects already under way which aim to achieve this?
Thanks in advance for your help and ideas.
