well there are some differences of course between VBM5 and VBM8, and even between different versions of VBM8 (for example, between VBM v35x and v42x there were some changes related to skull-stripping which actually lead to worse results with the later version in case of my very specific data, that is more non-brain parts are accidentally classified as GM).
In the latest picture you attached the left image looks brighter than the right one / the GM seems to be "thicker". This might be related to different forms of modulation, so once "non-linear only" and once "affine + non-linear". Of course the results would be different then. Still, this might also just be side product of differently scaled images when displaying them in SPM. Difficult to say.
