Cochrane Public Health Group
We would like to invite applications for this valuable and challenging opportunity to enhance the role and value of Cochrane systematic reviews in the field of public health.
The Cochrane Public Health Group (CPHG) is part of The Cochrane Collaboration. This is an international network of individuals and organisations committed to preparing, maintaining, updating and disseminating systematic reviews of healthcare interventions to help people make well-informed decisions about health care (see www.cochrane.org). The focus of this Review Group is to produce and publish Cochrane reviews of the effects of population-level public health interventions (see http://ph.cochrane.org/home); it is one of 53 Cochrane Review Groups worldwide that contribute to The Collaboration.
Funding has been provided via the Universities of Cardiff and Oxford for a UK-based Editorial Fellow to develop a business case and make funding applications for a UK CPHG satellite group to work alongside the main editorial base in Melbourne, Australia. Within this role, the Fellow is expected to explore how far the information needs of UK, European and International organisations with a role for public health policy development are met by existing Cochrane reviews and protocols. This exercise should lead to a priority list of review questions and sub-questions that are tailored to the needs of policy makers and inform both the business case and the development of the CPHG as a whole.
The Fellow will work closely with the UK-based editors and others in the CPHG, and with the co-ordinating and managing editors in Melbourne.
The ideal applicant will be educated to degree level or above in a relevant discipline, with managerial, administrative, scientific or publishing experience or equivalent, along with excellent organisational and communication skills. Applicants should be familiar with public health research and policy making. Specific knowledge of the role of public health systematic reviews and The Cochrane Collaboration would be welcomed.
The location of the post is flexible for the right candidate but it is expected that they will be based within a UK higher education institution with established links to the CPHG and able to provide professional support and guidance for the appointee. Potential locations include, but are not limited to, Cardiff, Exeter and Glasgow.
To discuss the post further please contact Alison Weightman at Cardiff University ([log in to unmask]) or Rob Anderson at the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Exeter ([log in to unmask]).
Base and reporting structure: Flexible within the UK; Contracted to Cardiff University
Duration: Six months full-time or 12 months part-time.
Secondment proposals will be welcomed.
Salary range: £38522 - £44607 per annum, (pro rata for part time) Grade 7
Closing date: Thursday, 7 February 2013
