The middle East fracas, Doug? Iraq? Mesopotamia? To follow 'die' with 'disappear' seems redundant on first reading in such a compact piece but perhaps it can be argued that disappearance is a stage beyond dying. The dangling line-thrown 's' I'm presuming is intended to connote the disparity or hypocrisy between religion and militarism. Sing out if I'm wide of the mark.
