Rog please post for me - thanks Dave
Hi Tim
Jim is correct that there is an excellent example at Bitton and that it is
written up in the BIAS journal. It is actually the Painters Pit site and
appears as part of Golden Valley coalworks report in Journal No23 (1990) by
the late John Cornwell. I have a copy if you can't get hold of one.
It was also recently the subject of some emergency repairs (repointing)
carried out by the SGMRG with South Glos Council grant money
A further measured survey was carried out as part of that work (unpublished
as yet) and a lock added to the gate that gives access to the inside.
I have a key and can arrange permission for access from the owner if you are
interested in a visit
ALSO
I assume you have you seen the Sopwith photo from the late 19thC showing a
man stoking an underground furnace - I have a copy as a sterioview if you
haven't
Regards
David Hardwick
