University of East Anglia (UEA), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences PhD Studentship Award: “Qualitative Study of Participant Experiences of Assistive Technology and Telecare to Maintain Independent Living At Home for People with Dementia (ATTILA)
This PhD study will help generate a longitudinal qualitative prospective dataset to provide a distinct methodological and conceptual contribution to inform implementation and delivery of an assistive technologies intervention for a major NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme-funded project (ATTILA). Assistive technology (AT) and telecare are relatively new ways of delivering care and support to people with social care needs, with a range of devices now claimed to support the independence of people with social care needs, to reduce family care-givers burden, and to reduce costs of community care, or admissions into long term institutional care. The ATTILA randomised controlled trial will compare outcomes for people with dementia living independently in community settings, who do and do not receive AT/telecare. The studentship will use a qualitative, participative approach to provide thematic and narrative findings from experiences of stakeholder participants (service users, carers and professionals), to evaluate the acceptability and impact of engaging with assistive technologies. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of £13,590 per annum (2012/13), UK/EU tuition fees and some appropriate training costs. The primary supervisor is Dr Fiona Poland, with Dr Chris Fox (UEA) and Professor Stan Newman (City University).
Further information on the studentship can be found at:

The deadline for applications is 22nd January
