An interesting keynote. For me, there was something missing in it. I would have liked James Curran to have acknowledged the clear split that there is within media studies courses, between employability focused training and scholarly criticism.

Subject: Re: Defending Media Studies
Let's not work ourselves into too much of a lather over this. Although of course they will never admit it, the main reason why sections of the media dislike media studies so much is because many people involved in the subject are critical of the media. And it's no accident that the press should be the chief culprits here, since those media academics who take a particular interest in the press are, for the most part, even more critical of the press than they are of other media. So, in my view, these barbs issuing forth from the press simply show that we're hitting home. Thus what we should be doing is intensifying the critique still further - and taking particular advantage of the huge body of evidence thrown up by the Leveson Inquiry, as well as the current spectacle of a government too cowed by or too complicit with the press to put Leveson's recommendations into practice. As for the Telegraph, I personally don't regard it as a newspaper at all, and most emphatically not as a 'quality' one, or whatever the euphemism is these days. So, let's take the gloves off and get on with it.
Best, Julian.

No it's not, it's entirely predictably and typically disgraceful. Nothing remarkable, unfortunately. Best to steer clear of the Telegraph, it's bad for your nerves.
