As both journalism academic and practitioner (sorry, sorry, columnist in Sunday Telegraph of all things, trying to convince a largely sceptical readership we've got to do something about climate change) I know there are many, many newspaper journalists who still believe that journalism can be a 'public good' and are tearing their hair out at the antics of their colleagues at the Sun, News of the World etc.
The problem is the old model of newspaper journalism when papers that didn't pander to the lowest common denominator used to make a profit is dead. Rather than attacking journalists as the Enemy, surely anyone who wants to try to raise standards in public life needs to work towards finding a way good quality journalism as a social and public good can survive in the digital age.
Indirectly subsidised newspapers? Public Interest journalism websites funded by philanthropists or concerned citizens? More research into ways young people will want to pay to read good quality journalism on their smart phones? Every year I see dozens of idealistic young journalism students who want to make the world a better place through the craft they are learning. Of course they need regulation and ethics - but they have lots of ethics and maybe in the future, without having to please an old-style press baron, rather their engaged, interested and informed internet audience, they will be able to use them more easily.
PS thought that Telegraph blog was hilariously bad, but you wouldn't want to censor it would you?
Best wishes
Sarah

Sorry, too much self-congratulation going on.
There is a grain of truth in the journalists’ complaint that Media Studies obstructs journalism.
At their best, journalists attempt to capture the essence of events. At which point, Media Studies interjects: you can’t do that; you’re being essentialist.
At their worst, journalists do whatever their managing editor tells them. Among journalists seeking to resist this kind of pressure, adherence to shared goals such as truth and objectivity, has proved an effective line of defence. At which point, Media Studies interjects: you can’t do that……
Think you’ve heard it before?
They have: journalists have been hearing the relativist complaint from Media Studies for 40 years. No wonder they are tired and emotional.
About time we academics offered the hacks a way of being more like journalists, instead of lining up with those who would make them even lesser, licensed creatures.
Best wishes
Andrew

Let’s not work ourselves into too much of a lather over this. Although of course they will never admit it, the main reason why sections of the media dislike media studies so much is because many people involved in the subject are critical of the media. And it’s no accident that the press should be the chief culprits here, since those media academics who take a particular interest in the press are, for the most part, even more critical of the press than they are of other media. So, in my view, these barbs issuing forth from the press simply show that we’re hitting home. Thus what we should be doing is intensifying the critique still further – and taking particular advantage of the huge body of evidence thrown up by the Leveson Inquiry, as well as the current spectacle of a government too cowed by or too complicit with the press to put Leveson’s recommendations into practice. As for the Telegraph, I personally don’t regard it as a newspaper at all, and most emphatically not as a ‘quality’ one, or whatever the euphemism is these days. So, let’s take the gloves off and get on with it.
Best, Julian.

No it's not, it's entirely predictably and typically disgraceful. Nothing remarkable, unfortunately. Best to steer clear of the Telegraph, it's bad for your nerves.
