4. video cameras and tablets
I would suggest you pop into jessops or John Lewis have a look at
modern SD storage cameras. Almost all do video and many do HD, and quite
a lot have mic inputs.
Camcorders typically have better longer lenses, but you may not need
that
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/sony/hdr-cx250-full-hd-camcorder-in-black-84090/show.html
Alternatively use Flip or similar:
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=flip+cameras&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7GGIE_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=640950505034925413&sa=X&ei=AOXrUNzBLsLPhAfC44CgCw&ved=0CFYQ8wIwAA
No external mic, but we have used them on blogs before and they are
pretty amazing for the cost (£70)
One other thing to consider is to buy the naffest looking stuff. It is
much less desirable for would be thieves. In a previous life managing
public access computers, we tried lots of headphones and anything nice
just gets swiped, anything dull gets swiped, but at a much much slower
rate!
Use ipods or tablets if you want to add app features, but they seem
eminently stealable!

Hello Richard,
on behalf of Janet, if I may, the new ESP has an OpenSearch API (see
previous threads) under CC BC-NC-SA
see here:
http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/api/
that provides open access to the metadata search
By the way, much discussion has also been had of your data.modes.org.uk
and
we are hoping that ESP
will be one of the first to incorporate search terms support via a
WordPress plugin integration with your service
thanks
James

Subject: video cameras and tablets
Hi all,
Happy New Year to you all!
Can anyone advise me on the pros and cons of video cameras versus
tablets, for the purposes of making short, informal films for social
media (etc)? I think cameras would be easier to use (more wieldy), but
I'm struggling to find handy, easy to use, inexpensive ones that include
an external mic jack, which I'm informed is essential for good sound
quality. Since Kodak don't produce cameras any more, it seems difficult
to find anything suitable. And I've heard lots of good things about
iPhone/iPad capabilities in this area. Just hoping there's something
cheaper out there that does the job as effectively! The nice thing about
a tablet would be its versatility; on the other hand, I'd like to be
able to lend these out to groups and schools for museumy projects
eventually, and I'd like to get them back ...
Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Helen
