With Christmas out the way, and inbox overloads hopefully being cleared, here another reminder of the Call for Papers for the Henry Sweet Society Colloquium. Deadline for abstract is Feb 28th. Looking forward to seeing you all in Berlin in the summer!
Nicola
_____________________________________________________________

The 2013 colloquium is being hosted by Ute Tintemann in the marvellous surroundings of the Berlin Academhy of Sciences in Berlin, with a plenary paper by Jurgen Trabant on Humboldt's linguistic ideas. So put it in the diary now!
Deadline for abstracts is end of February 2013, to be sent to [log in to unmask] (details below). As usual, there is a colloquium theme - the description of exotic languages before and after Humboldt - but papers in anyarea of the history of linguisics are always welcome. Submissions of absstracts from younger scholars are particularly sought, and the Society has a small number of bursaries (normally up to a value of £100) to assist younger or unwaged scholars in meeting the costs of attending the Colloquium.

(For those wanting even more history of linguistics, you could also combine the HSS Colloquium with attending the annual meeting of the German society for the history of linguistics, the Studienkreis, to be held in nearby Potsdam a few days earlier. Details of that colloquium are here: http://www.uni-potsdam.de/romanistik/hassler/aktuelles.html).

We look forward to receiving your abstracts, and please of course pass this on to anyone else who might be interested. Any queries to [log in to unmask]

Colloquium theme

Wilhelm von Humboldt's writings on language and linguistics are edited at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Accordingly, this year's colloquium theme is the description of "exotic" languages before and after Humboldt. During his lifetime, Wilhelm von Humboldt studied a vast number of languages like Basque, the native languages of the Americas, Chinese, Sanskrit, Kawi and other Austronesian languages. At his time these languages were seen as 'exotic' from a European point of view. According to Humboldt collecting language data and then describing the grammar and lexicon of the languages of the world should be the first steps in comparative linguistics. Only by studying the structure of a language in detail one could understand "the organism of languages". Humboldt based his language studies mainly on grammars and dictionaries that had been written before, for example by missionaries.
Humboldt's linguistic ideas are the topic of the Leslie Seiffert Memorial Lecture at the colloquium, to be held by Jürgen Trabant.
