The German Philosophy Seminar at the IGRS, University of London, reconvenes on 7 January. This Term the topic will be:
Hegel’s Origination of Property, the Family and the State
15:30–17:30, Room G21a, Senate House (ground floor)

Each seminar will begin with an introductory commentary, and be followed by a close reading of a short text. Texts will be provided in German and English, and will normally be a maximum of 15 pages (often much shorter), chosen from: the Logik of 1832; System der Sittlichkeit (System of Ethical Life); sections of the third of the Jenaer Systementwürfe; the Phänomenologie des Geistes; and the Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts (Elements of the Philosophy of Right). Knowledge of German is not essential to attend the seminars, but texts and key terms will be discussed in German and English.

7th January – General Introduction: Hegel’s metaphysics, and the place of the family in Hegel’s philosophy of Geist. Text from the Logik of 1832.
21st January – The embedding of sexual life in a philosophy of nature and Geist (Hegel and Schelling). Text from the System der Sittlichkeit.
4th February – The role of reflection: ‘das Anerkanntseyn ist das Daseyn’ (recognition is existence itself). Text from the third of the Jenaer Systementwürfe.
18th February – ‘Property’, ‘Possession’ and the Family. Further consideration of the text from the third of the Jenaer Systementwürfe.
4th March – Hegel’s mature reflection on the family in hearth, civil society and the state. Text from the Rechtsphilosophie or Philosophy of Right.
18th March – The discussion of the family in the Phänomenologie des Geistes. Hegel’s grounding of property, the family and the state in material life: conclusions and some suggestions for critique.
