Dear all,
Could I ask you to bring this to the attention of promising students who
would like to embark on a PhD project in the field of international climate
policy and climate finance? LSE is offering this funded PhD studentship as
part of six new PhD positions (others are mostly in environmental economics)
at the Grantham Research Institute. The deadline for applications is 10th
March 2013, and the start date is October 2013. Many thanks!
Best,

PhD Studentship in International Relations: “Policy learning in climate
finance”
The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the
London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is advertising for a
PhD studentship on policy learning in global climate finance. This is in
collaboration with the Department of International Relations
<http://www2.lse.ac.uk/internationalRelations/Home.aspx> under the
supervision of Dr Robert Falkner
<http://www2.lse.ac.uk/GranthamInstitute/whosWho/Associates/RobertFalkner.as
px> .
This project will study the emergence of global climate finance and the role
that policy learning is playing in international institutional design.
As the international community begins to implement pledges on climate
finance, politically fraught questions about the Green Climate Fund’s
institutional design, operational policies and governance arrangements need
to be resolved. Existing international aid mechanisms (eg Global Environment
Facility, Multilateral Ozone Fund) provide important lessons, and there is
much to be learnt from early experiences amongst the front runners, but how
will we learn about the arrangements that work best and can good practice be
transferred from setting to setting?
This project will investigate the extent to which processes of policy
learning and institutional diffusion are at work in this emerging area. It
will evaluate the drivers (eg functional logics; path dependency; power
asymmetries), as well as barriers that shape such international learning and
diffusion processes.
The project requires a candidate with a solid grounding in international
relations, political science or other related social sciences.
Experience with qualitative research methods will be of benefit.

ernreview_index.htm> , and brings together international expertise from
across the social sciences to establish a world-leading centre for
policy-relevant research and training.
