I agree with Brian on this one, the convenience, and to some extent
simplicity, of having linux as a virtual machine (or the other way
round) out weighs the slight performance hit. I've used vmplayer to
great effect for this - and you also have the convenience of being able
to work on things from both operating systems simultaneously which is a
real boon for paper writing.
