How would you respond if you could 'feel' social data and connections? If socially generated data and networked connections were percolating outside of computational devices into the physical world, growing ‘naturally’ into places and onto artifacts, how could they be designed for and interacted upon?
As computing moves into the background and social media pervade everyday life, we need in HCI a broader vocabulary and additional resources for designing with socially generated data in ways that are rich, meaningful and sustainable. On the other hand, as designers of future products and environments, we urgently need to grasp and embrace the fluid social practices of connectivity.
In this one-day workshop, we aim to explore how the two lines of inquiry of sociability and materiality are and could be further linked towards a novel research agenda in social interaction design (SxD) that merges social data and networked connections with a vision for materiality in computing and tangible interaction.
This is an interdisciplinary workshop that welcomes humanists, social scientists, HCI scholars, social computing and CSCW researchers, computer scientists, interaction and service designers, and artists/practitioners already working on sociability and materiality outside and around the field. The workshop will use a research-through-design approach to explore relevant concepts, practices and technologies, and identify emerging design issues and research opportunities.
Outcomes from the workshop will be communicated via a planned theme issue on ACM Interactions.

WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS
Participants will be selected on the basis of a 4-page contribution submitted in the CHI Extended Abstracts format. Visual formats from artist/practitioners are also accepted. Submissions should be sent to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by January 11th, 2013. Please note that at least one author must register to attend the workshop, in addition to registering for at least one day of the conference.
