As part of the Transforming Tate Britain Building, Archives, Access project supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Tate is currently advertising a vacancy for an Archive Conservator (Part-time, 21.6 hours per week, on a 18 month fixed term from April 2013)
This is a unique opportunity to work on a culturally significant project, Transforming Tate Britain: Building, Archives, Access which will make 52,000 items from Tate Archive available to the public for viewing online for the first time. These include diaries, letters, and sketchbooks from influential British artists of the 20th century, such as Stanley Spencer, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, and Henry Moore. This is an invaluable opportunity to work within Tate’s Conservation department, and to provide support and expertise for the Archive Collections included in the digitisation project.
As Archive Conservator, you will undertake a survey of the archive collections selected for digitisation, write condition reports, undertake interventive treatments, complete documentation, train Archive staff & a team of volunteers and oversee housing of Archive materials.
You will hold a recognised qualification in Conservation or equivalent with demonstrable practical experience treating, assessing materials. It is essential to have analytical and problem-solving skills, organisational, time-management and planning skills, and to be an effective communicator. You will need to be able to work independently on conservation treatments and provide specialist advice for storage, transport and installation of Archive materials. Good IT skills are required as is a willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
