Title:  Researcher in Statistical Genetics

Description: Advances in technology which allow assaying of millions of markers simultaneously have revolutionized gene mapping in human genetics, making it one of the most exciting and fast moving fields in science. Genetic studies are done in the laboratory by using statistical and computational methods to link disease and trait phenotypes to high density genetic data. You will develop and apply methods for conducting and interpreting genetic association studies (gene-based analysis, pathway analysis, genetic risk profiling). The primary focus of your work will be applications of new and existing statistical methods to a wide range of phenotypes. Two specific projects fall within the remit of the position
-	Understanding genetic predisposition to eye disease. Several studies are ongoing, focusing both on disease cohorts and on large samples of healthy individuals with quantitative measures relevant to eye disease.
-	Understanding the genetic basis of cancer through detailed interrogation of large scale cancer data sets. This work will be initially focusing on esophageal adenocarcinoma although with possible expansions to other areas of interest within the lab, particularly melanoma and ovarian cancer.

Environment: You will be based in the Statistical Genetics lab at QIMR. The Lab comprises staff and students working on statistical methods development and on applications to data. Specific projects ongoing in the Lab are listed here

You will work closely with both members of the Lab and with co-located staff within the Genetics and Computational Biology Department at QIMR (http://www.qimr.edu.au/page/Our_Research/Research_Departments/Genetics/ ). The Department has a critical mass of internationally renowned researchers interested in dissecting the genetic basis of human disease (12 laboratories with overlapping expertise). QIMR, one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, is undergoing a period of expansion, with the current staff roll of ~600 set to increase substantially in the coming years.

Research Areas: Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Cancer Genetics.

Suitable background: The post is ideally suited to someone with a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistics or bioinformatics. Experience in the analysis/manipulation of large datasets and a good knowledge of computing is desirable. Preference will be given to applicants with a very good publication record relative to opportunity. Experience in cancer or ophthalmic genetics advantageous but not essential. Non-statistical applicants must be able to demonstrate some knowledge of statistics. For statistical applicants, some knowledge of genetics is required.

Grade: QIMR Research Officer, salary AUD68,587-73,624, depending on experience. Attractive salary packing benefits also apply (top $16,000 paid tax free). Appointment is full-time, fixed term for an initial period of up to 2 years (renewal subject to funding and performance)
