The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) produces guidance, quality standards and other advice products to support health, public health and social care professionals to make sure that the care they provide is of the best possible quality and offers the best value for money.

Our guidance and other products are evidence-based, independent and authoritative. They can be used by the NHS, local authorities, charities, and anyone with a responsibility for commissioning or providing healthcare, public health or social care services. We also support these groups in putting our guidance into practice.

Internal Clinical Guidelines Programme (ICG) - Centre for Clinical Practice

• Health Economic Modeller – Band 8A (£38,851 - £26,621) - Manchester based (although London will be considered for this role)

• Health Economist – Band 7 (£30,460 - £40,157) – Manchester based

NICE’s Internal Clinical Guidelines (ICG) programme within the Centre for Clinical Practice (CCP) develops clinical guidelines for the NHS. These are recommendations, based on the best available evidence of clinical and cost effectiveness, on the appropriate treatment and care of people with specific diseases and conditions.

We are recruiting to two posts; a Health Economist and a Health Economic Modeller. Working collaboratively within a small multidisciplinary team, the post holder(s) will be responsible for advising on health economic issues during development of the guidelines, identify the types of evidence to address the questions, appraising the evidence and preparing structured summaries of the evidence. The post holder(s) will also undertake the development of original, applied health-economic analyses that will be used to inform the deliberations of Guideline Development Groups (GDGs), comprising decision-makers who are predominantly clinical and patient experts with limited formal expertise in health economics.

The Health Economist will have skills in health technology appraisal/clinical guideline development with an understanding of the principles of health economic modelling and, ideally, experience in developing such models; you will be an enthusiastic analyst with a relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g. public health, operational research, statistics, health service research or health economics) or equivalent experience. Critical appraisal, interpretation and synthesis of health care research evidence; along with familiarity with evidence-based healthcare, methods of clinical guideline development or health technology assessment are essential.

The primary requirement for the position of Health Economic Modeller is demonstrable ability in the practical application of mathematical modelling to inform real-world decision problems. Candidates should have skills and experience in decision-analytic modelling, ideally gained in the context of health-economic evaluation, and a commitment to maximising value in the NHS. At present, the team has a preference for models developed in MS Excel, TreeAge and/or WinBUGS; however, applications from candidates with experience in other platforms are welcome. Excellent skills in the analysis and synthesis of quantitative data are essential, as is the ability to communicate the methods and results of complex analyses to a range of audiences, both orally and in writing.

The post holder(s) will have the opportunity to extend their own skills in modelling and health economics and contribute to methodological development in the field.

If you would like to discuss the posts, please call 0161 8703101 for an informal discussion with Nicole Elliott (Associate Director).

Please indicate on your application form if you have a preference to location or band (7 or 8a) so this can be taken into account.

Closing date for applications: 25th January 2013 at noon. No late applications will be accepted.

Interview Date: 25th February 2013

No agencies please.
