Day Courses in Social Research, in association with the CAQDAS Networking Project, the South East Doctoral Training Centre (SEDTC) and the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), runs a comprehensive programme of training and seminar events in research techniques. 6th February 2013 - Managing literature using NVivo This workshop provides participants with hands-on practice with using the NVivo to facilitate a systematic review of literature. Used creatively and systematically NVivo can help you manage the processes of accessing, searching and cross referencing literature files and other supplementary materials and in developing critical appraisals about them. Participants use sample literature files. The workshop is for version 10.

7th February, 2013 - Research Management The course is aimed at researchers who are beginning to assume greater responsibility for managing projects. It will identify the issues and problems which may arise in developing and conducting a research project, including relationships with sponsors and funders, planning and resource management, negotiating access, report writing and dissemination.

14th February 2013 - Getting Published in Social Science Journals Getting your work published in journals is an essential part of academic life. This one-day course will offer a friendly and supportive forum in which to find out more about how academic journals work and how to increase your chances of getting articles published. The course will provide you with a good understanding of: the journal process, from submission to publication; what referees will be looking for when they review your article; how to respond to conflicting referee reports; and what you need to consider when deciding where to submit your work. It will also provide guidance and discussion about the characteristics of a good journal article, and how to make sure that your article is noticed once it has been published.

25th February 2013 - Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis This course provides an introduction to the analysis of qualitative data derived from in-depth interviews and focus groups. We will explore the relationship between the way in which data is generated and different approaches to analysis, and provide practical examples of analysis from initial coding through to the presentation of findings. Both thematic analysis and narrative analysis will be discussed. The course is intended for researchers with only limited experience of qualitative analysis.

The CAQDAS Networking Project website provides a range of materials that highlight important considerations in choosing between qualitative software packages. This seminar builds on this information, discussing the issues to a more advanced level. The range of products are described and compared, their methodological benefits and weaknesses appraised, practical utility and illustrated using data from a range of research studies. Topics covered include: Handling 'data': data organisation - Closeness to data - Output/reporting - Coding and alternative ways of handling analysis - Complex interrogation of data - Expressing ideas in visual ways - Transportation of projects - Team work logistics.

22nd March - Methods and applications using ATLAS.ti (Event hosted by MODE, Institute of Education, London) ATLAS.ti is one of the leading qualitative software packages. This seminar offers the opportunity to discuss methodological aspects and applications of its use with presentations by leading ATLAS.ti users and trainers (Dr Susanne Fries, Quarc Consulting, and Dr Christina Silver, The CAQDAS Networking Project). 3 sessions are being held: Necessity for new methods in computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (S Friese); Using qualitative software to do a literature review (C Silver); Qualitative video analysis: Various approaches and new possibilities (S Friese). 22nd May 2013 - Introduction to Qualitative Interviewing This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative interviewing in both academic and applied social research, including the evaluation of services. The course is primarily designed for researchers with little or no experience of qualitative interviewing. It will also be useful for more experienced researchers who have had little formal training or who wish to reflect on their practice. The day combines sessions exploring the nature of a qualitative approach, the interview process and the use of qualitative interviews in evaluation with practical exercises on the interview as interaction, developing an interview guide and conducting interviews. We will explore a variety of ethical issues as these arise in discussion. (Please note: the analysis of qualitative data is not covered in this course.)

30th May 2013 - Negotiating Ethical Challenges in Social Research Ethical issues need to be addressed at all stages of a research project, from design to dissemination, and given serious critical consideration by all researchers, irrespective of whether they are postgraduate students, practising teachers or seasoned academics. This one-day course will explore, in detail, the range of ethical issues that may arise at all stages of a research project - from formulating the initial design to disseminating the findings to interested parties. It will provide insights into a range of principles that may underpin ethical decision-making, and the legal and regulatory contexts within which researchers now have to operate. Participants will explore many of ethical dilemmas researchers can face, and discuss the various ways in which such dilemmas can be resolved. The course will have a strong practical focus, and is suitable for those undertaking qualitative research across the range of social sciences. Participants will be encouraged to bring along an example of an ethical dilemma from their own research, in relation to design, data collection, or analysis and reporting.
