Our courses are run by experts in their fields and they are popular so book early to avoid disappointment. All events are held at the University of Surrey, Guildford (UK), unless otherwise stated. Bespoke events held at other institutions can be arranged on request. Our collaboration with the SEDTC means we can offer very reasonable rates for students on many of our courses.

See http://www.surrey.ac.uk/sociology/study/daycourses/fees/ for more info on fees. Our collaboration with the NCRM means that some of our seminar events can be provided for free or at very low cost. See individual seminar information for details.

22nd May 2013 - Introduction to Qualitative Interviewing This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative interviewing in both academic and applied social research, including the evaluation of services. The course is primarily designed for researchers with little or no experience of qualitative interviewing. It will also be useful for more experienced researchers who have had little formal training or who wish to reflect on their practice. The day combines sessions exploring the nature of a qualitative approach, the interview process and the use of qualitative interviews in evaluation with practical exercises on the interview as interaction, developing an interview guide and conducting interviews. We will explore a variety of ethical issues as these arise in discussion. (Please note: the analysis of qualitative data is not covered in this course.)

30th May 2013 - Negotiating Ethical Challenges in Social Research Ethical issues need to be addressed at all stages of a research project, from design to dissemination, and given serious critical consideration by all researchers, irrespective of whether they are postgraduate students, practising teachers or seasoned academics. This one-day course will explore, in detail, the range of ethical issues that may arise at all stages of a research project - from formulating the initial design to disseminating the findings to interested parties. It will provide insights into a range of principles that may underpin ethical decision-making, and the legal and regulatory contexts within which researchers now have to operate. Participants will explore many of ethical dilemmas researchers can face, and discuss the various ways in which such dilemmas can be resolved. The course will have a strong practical focus, and is suitable for those undertaking qualitative research across the range of social sciences. Participants will be encouraged to bring along an example of an ethical dilemma from their own research, in relation to design, data collection, or analysis and reporting.
