Dr. Thomas Gernon
I am a Lecturer in Earth Science at the University of Southampton, based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. My major interests are in physical volcanology and applying fluid mechanics to understand a range of geological flows. Currently, my main research focus is on explosive eruption processes, the evolution of magmatism during active rifting, magma chamber processes (e.g., Las CanĂ£das, Tenerife) and the emplacement of high-level intrusions. I am also very interested in the volcanological evolution of volcanic rifted margins (e.g., North Atlantic) and their relationship to climatic perturbations such as the PETM. My undergraduate degree was in geology at University College Dublin, where I developed a strong interest in igneous and volcanic field geology. This curiosity lead on to a Ph.D. and postdoc with Steve Sparks at Bristol, focussing on emplacement processes in kimberlite eruptions (with case studies in southern Africa and Arctic Canada). After several busy years settling into a new teaching programme at NOCS, I am now in a position to contribute to the VMSG committee and thereby assist wherever possible in promoting and advancing the study of physical volcanology. I am also particularly keen to represent the UK marine sciences on the VMSG committee.
