2 PDRA vacancies in Coronal Seismology at Warwick, UK
from Valery Nakariakov [December 11, 2012]
£23,811 – £26,779 pa or £27,578 – £35,938 pa
Fixed Term Contract from 1 April 2013 until 31 March 2015 (with the possibility for further extension).
The Centre for Fusion, Space & Astrophysics at the University of Warwick is seeking two ambitious post-doctoral researchers to work within the project “Magnetohydrodynamic wave diagnostics of the solar atmosphere in the era of transformative high-resolution observations”. The positions are funded by an ERC Advanced Grant held by Valery Nakariakov. The project comprises of the analysis of data obtained with space-borne telescopes including SDO, Hinode, STEREO and RHESSI, and future missions, and ground-based observational facilities, and analytical and numerical modelling of these phenomena, including high-performance MHD and plasma simulations, and plasma diagnostics.
You must hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD in a relevant discipline. Experiences in solar data analysis, MHD wave theory and plasma physics will be a strong advantage.
The positions are available from April 2013, initially for two years.
Informal enquiries: Professor Valery Nakariakov ([log in to unmask]).
Further details may be found on https://secure.admin.warwick.ac.uk/webjobs/jobs/research/job17615.html
Please quote job vacancy reference number 72522-122.
The closing date/time for applications is midnight (British time) at the end of Monday 11 February 2013.

PDRA in Solphys, Sheffield
from uksp_sec [December 8, 2012]
Job Reference Number: UOS005728
Job Title: PDRA in Solar Physics
Salary: Grade 7 (GBP28,401-35,938 pa)
Closing Date: 3rd January 2013
The Solar Physics and Space Plasma Research Centre (SP2RC) within the School of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Sheffield is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to undertake cutting-edge research into solar atmosphere physics with Professor R. Erdélyi (Principal Investigator) and other members of SP2RC. The work of this Centre is at the forefront of addressing theoretical and observational issues in solar physics. The theoretical research, that includes analytical and computational MHD modelling, is also complemented with a strong and increasing involvement in ground- and space-based observational programmes. Further information about SP2RC is available online at http://sp2rc.group.shef.ac.uk/index.htm
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to a broad programme of research involving plasma-astrophysics, MHD theory and observations applied to problems in solar atmospheric dynamics. In particular, the post-holder will emphasise leadership of research into solar MHD waves and oscillations by means of solar magneto-seismology (SMS) applicable to small-scale localised magnetic building blocks expanding from photosphere to corona. Key elements of the research will also address solar atmospheric heating by MHD waves.
Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent) and demonstrable experience of research in solar physics, MHD, astrophysics or a related field. The post-holder will possess excellent theoretical and/or a high standard of computational skills with an open mind towards carrying out solar observations and data analysis, however, experts in solar observations only will also be considered. Knowledge of IDL is desirable. This post is funded by the STFC Consolidated Grant scheme and is tenable immediately for 26 months.
For informal enquiries applicants may contact Prof Robertus Erdelyi (email: robertus [at] sheffield.ac.uk or tel.: +44-114-222383).

Permanent positions in Solar Physics/MHD available at the University of Dundee
from Antonia Wilmot-Smith [December 6, 2012]
Permanent positions in Solar Physics/MHD available at the University of Dundee
Grades 8-9 Lecturer and above (£37,012-52,706)
The University of Dundee is recruiting new permanent members of staff under its Dundee Fellows scheme.
One of the main recruitment areas is Solar Physics/Magnetohydrodynamics where successful candidates will join a research group that presently consists of three permanent staff (Prof G. Hornig, Drs D. Pontin and A. Wilmot-Smith) and three PhD students (http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/mhd/). Two STFC-funded PDRAs will also join the group in 2013.
Successful applicants are likely be early career researchers who have demonstrated their potential to become leaders in the field. However, more established researchers are also encouraged to apply. We interpret the research area in its broadest sense and welcome applications in all areas of theory, modelling and observations of solar, space and astrophysical plasmas. The posts are research-focussed for the first 5 years, with a gradually increasing emphasis on undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (up to a normal level for a position on the Lecturer-Professor scale).
More information and details of how to apply are available at http://www.dundee.ac.uk/dundeefellows/
The MHD group also welcome all informal enquiries and discussion (contact e.g. [log in to unmask])
The closing date is 23rd January.

SOLAR PHYSICS: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION AT ARMAGH
OBSERVATORY
A fixed-term postdoctoral research position tenable at the Armagh Observatory
is available from 2013 January 1 or as soon as possible thereafter for an
initial 3-month period with a possible extension to work with Professor J.
Gerry Doyle. Candidates must have expertise in solar physics, in particular
the interpretation and/or modelling of small-scale solar transient features.
Expertise in the use of data from different instruments and in particular their
co-alignment is essential. The research will involve looking closely at
various assumptions relating to spectral line formation in the interpretation
of the observational data. Full details of the position and the selection
criteria are in the Job Information pack available from the Armagh Observatory
