PDRA in Solphys, Sheffield
Job Reference Number: UOS005728
Job Title: PDRA in Solar Physics
Salary: Grade 7 (GBP28,401-35,938 pa)
Closing Date: 3rd January 2013
The Solar Physics and Space Plasma Research Centre (SP2RC) within the School of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Sheffield is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to undertake cutting-edge research into solar atmosphere physics with Professor R. Erdélyi (Principal Investigator) and other members of SP2RC. The work of this Centre is at the forefront of addressing theoretical and observational issues in solar physics. The theoretical research, that includes analytical and computational MHD modelling, is also complemented with a strong and increasing involvement in ground- and space-based observational programmes. Further information about SP2RC is available online at http://sp2rc.group.shef.ac.uk/index.htm
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to a broad programme of research involving plasma-astrophysics, MHD theory and observations applied to problems in solar atmospheric dynamics. In particular, the post-holder will emphasise leadership of research into solar MHD waves and oscillations by means of solar magneto-seismology (SMS) applicable to small-scale localised magnetic building blocks expanding from photosphere to corona. Key elements of the research will also address solar atmospheric heating by MHD waves.
Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent) and demonstrable experience of research in solar physics, MHD, astrophysics or a related field. The post-holder will possess excellent theoretical and/or a high standard of computational skills with an open mind towards carrying out solar observations and data analysis, however, experts in solar observations only will also be considered. Knowledge of IDL is desirable. This post is funded by the STFC Consolidated Grant scheme and is tenable immediately for 26 months.
For informal enquiries applicants may contact Prof Robertus Erdelyi (email: robertus [at] sheffield.ac.uk or tel.: +44-114-222383).
