We are seeking candidates for a collaborative project between the Department of Industrial Design (ID) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) & the Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building (DAB) of the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

2 PhD positions in Interaction Design & Psychology:
1 – Media Creation Devices Supporting Remembering (ID-TU/e, ref.nr. 12666-1)
2 – Effects of Personal Media on Remembering (DAB-UTS, ref.nr. 12666-2)

PhD position 1 will be based at:
The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, www.tue.nl) is one of Europe's leading research universities. The Eindhoven area, in the southern part of the Netherlands, is one of Europe's top 'innovation ecosystems', with many high-tech companies and institutes. The Department of Industrial Design (ID) of the TU/e, founded in 2001, is a rapidly growing department with over 550 students, both Bachelor and Master, around 80 research staff members and about 60 lecturers and support staff. ID focuses on intelligent services, products, and related services. These a priori innovative systems enable people to interact with the environment in an optimal and flexible way.

PhD position 2 will be based at:

The Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building (DAB) of UTS seeks to lead the development of the academic disciplines of design, architecture and the built environment. The Australian Government’s 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation assessing research quality within Australia's higher education institutions ranks the faculty’s design research as being at world standard and as the highest of the eleven universities in the state of NSW.

Project description
These two PhD-positions are part of a body of research called “Materialising Memories”, which studies how we can design for improved reliving of personal memories through the innovative use of (digital) media. The trends show that people create more and more digital media, without organising or archiving, which in the end prevents them from using the media as desired. Materialising Memories looks into several relevant aspects, for example, what type of remembering experiences can be identified in everyday life.
The TU/e PhD-position will focus on facilitating the creation of fewer, but more appropriate personal media for an intended remembering experience. This will be done using a user-centred design process and the implementation of innovative interaction designs.
The UTS PhD-scholarship is flexible as long as it is relevant for the Materialising Memories research. For example, it could focus on finding out what the effects are of personal (digital) media and media designs on remembering in everyday life, in the short- and long-term.

Requirements
Candidates for the TU/e PhD-position should have a Master’s degree in Interaction Design or a related topic, with excellent grades (First Class Honours or equivalent), an interest in combining psychology theory and user-centred design, well-developed prototyping skills, and experience with empirical evaluations of design concepts.
Candidates for the UTS PhD-position should have a Master’s degree in Psychology, Interaction Design or a related topic, with excellent grades (First Class Honours or equivalent), an interest in combining psychology theory and user-centred design and well-developed analytic skills.
Ideally both candidates will have experience with research and related activities, such as publishing or attending conferences. Other key attributes include excellent communication-, social-, and team-working skills.

Appointment and Salary
The appointments start ideally March 1, 2013, but will remain open until filled. Both positions must be concluded with writing a PhD thesis.
The TU/e PhD-position will be funded by NWO through the VIDI “Remember to Forget” (12666). As an employee of the TU/e you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions (including excellent sport facilities and child care). A salary is offered starting at EUR 2,042 per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to EUR 2,612 per month (gross) in the last (4th) year.
The UTS PhD-scholarship will be according to the Australian Postgraduate Award rate of AUD 24,653 per annum.
