Can anybody suggest a source for statistics on the proportions of railway lines which are on embankment and viaduct and those which are in cuttings and tunnels? Obviously such figures will vary considerably according to the base geography - such as in the Fens - as well as the line taken by the engineer balancing cost against curve, gradient etc.
There is a small diagram of the London & Birmingham line in O'Dell's 'Railways and Geography' and some interesting statistics in the 1970 Appleton report on a few closed lines but, other than these, I haven't found much information. Am I right too in thinking the MR Sheffield - Manchester line has the highest proportion of its length in tunnel - underground railways and HS1 excepted, of course.
