The Open University is having the same problem(s) both with the authentication and in terms of getting a response. Apparently we are expected to wait 5 business days for a response from the Elsevier helpdesk!

Hi all,
Following the changes to authentication to ScienceDirect that took place
over the weekend we find ourselves completely unable to access
ScienceDirect off-campus, and it looks like we've been completely
excised from the Eduserv OpenAthens list as well as the UK Fed list. We
are using OpenAthens with the Athens to Shibboleth gateway, so it might
be that this is not affecting everyone, but is anyone else having
problems?
I've sent a message to Elsevier but the auto-reply I got suggested that
they are having a large amount of messages to deal with and they may not
be able to get back to me in the usual timeframe, which of course
appears not to be detailed on the auto-reply...
