Senergy Survey and GeoEngineering (S&G) is a leading provider of project management and consultancy services to the offshore Oil and Gas and Renewable Energy industries. S&G has significant experience and capability delivering services to its clients across the life cycle of a project from preliminary assessment studies through to final completion.
SS&G is looking to immediately appoint a full-time GIS developer to work closely with the GIS Manager within an expanding GIS team. The role will be based at Senergy’s new offices in Bath but will involve supporting Senergy’s activities globally.
The uptake of geospatial and desktop, web GIS tools and workflows within Senergy is significantly increasing after the successful implementation of a pilot Open Source web mapping application. A talented developer is required to play a key role in delivering the geospatial development goals of Senergy.
Primary Function
- Work with the GIS Manager to design and implement a spatial database system to optimise the use of geospatial data within SS&G and wider Senergy
- Take a lead role with development of Senergy’s web-mapping capability, both using JavaScript for the client application and utilising server-side frameworks such as Python or PHP where appropriate
- Meet development needs for creating in-house add-ins, plug-ins and tools to assist day-to-day geospatial data management and processing
- Pro-actively work with the in-house GIS Technicians and provide coding mentoring
- Provide desktop GIS support and products to assist the day-to-day delivery of SS&G’s projects
Essential Technical Experience
- Good experience of administration of spatial relational database management systems (RDMS). Strong preference for PostGIS experience. Would consider experience of other spatial RDMS such as MySQL, Microsoft SQLServer or Oracle
- Good knowledge of scripting languages for general manipulation of geospatial data, strong preference for Python for use with Esri’s ArcPy module or Open Source libraries such as GDAL/OGR.
- Good knowledge of JavaScript APIs for developing web mapping applications, preferably using Open Layers.
- Good knowledge using desktop GIS applications such as Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop and/or Quantum GIS (QGIS).
- First class spoken and written English
Beneficial Technical Experience
- GeoServer or MapServer to deliver web services, such as Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS)
- Knowledge of both other mapping and non-mapping JavaScript libraries and toolkits such as JQuery, Dojo and AJAX
- HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets 5 (CSS)
Qualifications
- Qualification in GIS or related technical discipline to BSc or MSc level, would consider a science, computer science or engineering degree with proven geospatial track record.

- Self-starter with enthusiasm and flair to develop creative solutions to new problems.
- Good understanding of principals and importance of Geodesy, which is critical when working in the marine sector.
- Must have good communication skills and the ability to deliver and manage software development projects.
