As part of a Special Mini-conference on Finance, States and the Economy, we are issuing a call for abstracts for a panel on “Rethinking Islamic Finance: Markets, Firms and Institutions.”
The ongoing global financial crisis has reopened academic debates that question the everyday practices and knowledge bases of investors, financial firms, and regulatory bodies. It has also given new momentum to the search for alternatives to the existing global financial order. One such alternative that has been put forward is Islamic finance. Deriving its core principles from the jurisprudential body of knowledge known as the Sharia, Islamic finance has grown into a global, one trillion US dollar market, in competition with conventional financial markets, instruments and institutions. We invite contributions to expand our empirical understanding of this social phenomenon. Priority will be given to papers that use new empirical research to address social theory.
The mini-conference is held concurrently with the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-economics. SASE is an international, interdisciplinary academic organization, with the majority of participants based in departments of economics, sociology, political science, organization studies, management, psychology, law and history.
EXTENDED ABSTRACTS (approximately 1000 words) are due by 14 January 2013 via the SASE website (www.sase.org). Full papers are due by 1 June 2013.
COMPETITIVE STIPENDS are available for graduate students, and competitive travel awards for scholars based outside of high-income countries. To be eligible for either award, please submit a full-paper not exceeding 5000 words via the SASE website (www.sase.org). Details are available at: https://sase.org/about-sase/conference-submission-guidelines_fr_25.html
