The EPSRC funded Internet of Secondhand Things (IoST) project in
partnership with Oxfam will explore how the internet of things can be
used to add value to objects and shopping practices within secondhand
markets with the aim of increasing the longevity of durable goods and
contributing to more sustainable patterns of consumption. Using
ethnography the project will investigate a range of settings of value
creation for second hand items, including the donating, displaying,
buying, appraisal and use of items, using the insights to create and
deploy prototype interventions in the field that use the internet of
things to enhance these practices.
The successful candidate will recruit participants that are donators
and/or buyers to secondhand shops to be involved in video ethnography.
They will conduct ethnographies in retail and domestic settings,
including participant observation, video ethnography and interviews.
Analysing data using an ethnomethodological or conversation analytic
approach engage with the project team to formulate interventions. The
candidate will be expected to work closely with technical partners in
UCL to inform the design, deployment and evaluation of technical
interventions.
