Applications are invited for the post of Statistician at the Health and Safety Laboratory, Buxton, Derbyshire
The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) is an agency of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is a unique multidisciplinary organisation with an international reputation as the UK’s leading health and safety research facility. With a purpose built laboratory and highly qualified staff, HSL has a sound foundation for further growth. As well as analytical laboratories for chemical, microbiological, occupational health, occupational hygiene and fire and explosion work, the laboratory houses specialist facilities for studying thermal stress, personal protective equipment and pedestrian safety, an anechoic chamber for noise and vibration work, and a customised suite for human volunteer studies.
The Mathematical Sciences Unit is seeking to appoint a statistician to work flexibly across a broad portfolio of research and underpin the strategic expansion of the unit. Two key areas of on-going research are epidemiological modelling of chronic occupational diseases, such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and modelling of component ageing and failure in nuclear facilities. The latter research, commissioned by the Office for Nuclear Regulation in support of its permissioning of nuclear installations in the UK, involves the development of statistical models for cracking which occurs within the graphite core of nuclear reactors.
Salary : The maximum of the pay range for this post is currently £32,937.
Successful applicants will be offered a point on the salary scale, appropriate to the level of their experience and skills, within the range £27,113 – £28,573.
