6th International Symposium on Travel Demand Management

Dalian, China, 21 - 23 August 2013

Website:  http://trans.dlut.edu.cn/tdm2013/

Academics, practitioners and governments around the world have been working hard to pursue efficient, effective and increasingly sophisticated Travel Demand Management (TDM) strategies as a complement to transport infrastructure investment. The series of TDM symposia started in 1998 at a time when it was appreciated that better use needed to be made of existing and new transport infrastructure. So far, there have been five symposia:

	Dates Theme Locations
1	April 1998	Travel Demand Management Newcastle upon Tyne, England
2	August 2003	Theory and Practice of Congestion Pricing Imperial College, London
3	August 2005	Success and failure of TDM measures Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland
4	July 2008	Visions, Concepts and Experiences of Travel Demand Management	Vienna, Austria
5	October 2010 Sustainable mobility: the contribution of TDM University of Aberdeen, Scotland

Theme of the 6th Symposium:

Integration of TDM strategies and the role of the new technologies

Currently, in the pursuit of low carbon transport and under the pressure of energy shortages and price rises, TDM strategies are increasingly important for residents, traffic engineers and transport policy makers. Research has shown that the greatest potential of TDM lies in integrating varied TDM strategies into a package in which these strategies can complement and reinforce each other. For example, the effectiveness of the London Congestion Charging Scheme has been improved by introducing tougher parking control. In China, a number of cities are moving towards flexible work scheduling while improving their public transit services. Integration of TDM strategies and the role of new technologies, for example the promotion of electric mobility with environmentally oriented pricing strategies for traditional cars is one example for such approaches. Integrating TDM strategies to mitigate traffic congestion, improve environmental problems and achieve sustainability will be an important trend in the coming decade. This Symposium aims to provide a forum where researchers, practitioners of various kinds, policy makers and regulators can share research ideas, experience and results on the most effective deployment of TDM.

We invite you to this Symposium. All contributions relevant to this theme are welcome, whether focussed on theory or practice.

Publication of Invited Papers

A subset of the papers presented at the Symposium will be invited for submission to two special issues in Transportmetrica Part B: Transport Dynamics and Transport. These will consist of 12-14 papers. The remaining papers will be considered for inclusion in a book to be published by Ashgate Publishers.
