Good luck with getting the users to apply the kind of perfect metadata that allows them to search AND browse AND filter AND sort. My rule of thumb is that users may or may not be willing to apply metadata but they've all got to save their document somewhere. If you can just persuade them to save it somewhere useful (eg into a logical structure that supports some of level of browse at least), then you've made a good start.

The big bucket theory - what's in a name, it appears to be a lot. EDRM systems normally use Sql or Oracle databases - are these not just big "buckets" with pointers.
In a perfect world a powerful automated metadata engine combined with a powerful "clever" search engine who needs structure?
But we do not have a perfect world (or do we?) and like the majority of people I trust my Mark 1 eyeball looking at a good structure!!!
When does a small bucket become a big bucket?
Many Regards

Virtual buckets have been used for several decades by the IT profession.
The old mainframe computers originally processed. data on magnetic tapes that were written to in blocks. Tapes, being linear were filled block by block. When spinning disks came in (1970s?), that could be written to randomly, the blocks were assigned to different areas on the disk, called buckets , to make storage retrieval more efficient.
So buckets have evolved from there to become a general term as container for digital data.

All
Just did a quick trawl of the internet and came across this.
http://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds279.1/docs/bucket.htm
This refers to data being collected on sea water salinity from the late 1960's onwards till 1998 and is called bucket data, because of the way it was collected.
Could this be a, sort of, origin for the term. It certainly pre-dates most of the usage I have seen.

I consider buckets to be the "archive" lower tier storage so beloved of IT depts, into which everything is bunged after a set period of time to reduce costs until someone makes a decision about when it should be deleted.

I take "bucket" to be a derogatory term meaning somewhere you pour data without taking too much care. You tend to put things carefully in to a folder or box.

We talk about buckets a lot in Records, the first time I heard the term used was in 1992 during a discussion about indexed searches versus folder navigation.
I have heard "The big bucket theory of retention"
Putting documents in buckets to organize.
A Google search for records and buckets came up with some interesting finds Did you know that Indiana has a Bucket Manager -http://www.in.gov/library/files/Cataloging_Training_Manual_Chapter19.pd
f
Contradictions?
Big buckets for simplifying records retention schedules.
Do Big Buckets = Big Headaches?
My question is, why did we start using that term? Wouldn't a descriptive word more in line with Records Management like folder or box be more appropriate?
