Postdoctoral Position at the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial
Physics (MPE) on the Study of the Circumburst and Host Galaxy
Properties of Gamma-Ray Bursts.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the High-Energy
Astrophysics Group at MPE (http://www.mpe.mpg.de), in Garching, Germany,
to work with Dr. Patricia Schady on the properties of gamma-ray bursts
(GRB) and their host galaxy. The successful applicant will be involved in
research on the broadband absorption properties of GRB afterglows, and in
investigating how these relate to the conditions of the host galaxy as a
whole. The position also includes trips to the ESO La Silla Observatory
in Chile to observe with the PI-led simultaneous imager, GROND
(http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~jcg/GROND).
Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy, preferably also previous
postdoc experience, and have an interest in one of the following areas:
high redshift galaxies, GRBs, the interseller medium of star-forming
galaxies, and chemical evolution of the universe. The appointment is
initially for two years with renewal for a third year contingent upon
satisfactory progress. Further details on the position and application
process can be found at www.mpe.mpg.de/~pschady/postdoc.html and on the
AAS jobs register (jobregister.aas.org/job_view?JobID=3D43903).
MPE is a world-class research institute, with over 200 research
scientists from across the world, and involvement in major national
and international projects. In addition, the proximity of MPE to the
Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics and the ESO headquarters offers a
stimulating and diverse working environment.
